A series of informal meetings and brainstorming sessions for wildlife lovers in Pakistan
Pakistan Wildlife Foundation (PWF), a Non-profit Conservation Organization has launched a series of informal meetings and brainstorming sessions for wildlife lovers in Pakistan. The mission of the organization is to educate the masses in the country in general and university students in particular regarding biodiversity and environment and to change their attitudes towards positive, sensible and responsible actions for nature. Pakistan Wildlife Foundation aims to provide a platform for the wildlife and nature lovers of the country to share their wildlife related experiences and an opportunity for the young scientists to learn from experiences of their seniors. WILDLIFE TALKS is the platform whereby the Young Scientists of the country could meet the senior scientists and wildlife ecologists. It is an opportunity of brain storming for wildlife lovers, managers, policy makers to get benefited through advises and suggestions of the seniors and to learn about recent trends in wildlife conservation.
The first such meeting (First WILDLIFE TALK) was organized on May 4, 2011 jointly by Pakistan Wildlife Foundation, Department of Zoology, University of the Punjab and Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department in Lahore at the Department of Zoology; University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Campus, Lahore.
Around 20 guests and resource persons from University of the Punjab, Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department and Punjab Fisheries Department whereas more than 125 Young Scientists from University of the Punjab, University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, University of Education Lahore, GC University Lahore and University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi participated the event.
After recitation from the Holy Quran, brief Introduction to Pakistan Wildlife Foundation and background for holding WILDLIFE TALKS was explained. Then a presentation by a Young Scientist Mr. Hassan Ali, PhD scholar at University of the Punjab, Lahore was made on use of GIS and Remote Sensing in Wildlife Studies. Thereafter, Prof. Z. B. Mirza, President Pakistan Wildlife Foundation delivered a lecture on Ecological linkages of wildlife species. The presentations’ section was followed by Open discussion and a question/answer session whereby Young Scientists leant about the recent trends in nature conservation and shared their ideas, experiences and suggestions with their fellows. In the certificate distribution ceremony, Certificates of appreciation were distributed among Young Scientists by Chief Guest Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, Registrar University of the Punjab and Chairman Department of Zoology, University of the Punjab. Dr. Abdul Aleem Chaudhry, Patron-in-Chief of Pakistan Wildlife Foundation delivered concluding remarks. Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, the Chief Guest, also being the host of the event thanked the guests and Young Scientists and announced that University of the Punjab have adopted two Tigers in Lahore Zoo as an act of awareness raising about wildlife conservation and support to Lahore Zoo. Dr. Mohammad Akhtar also offered Pakistan Wildlife Foundation to hold First Pakistan Wildlife Conference in the University of the Punjab, Lahore.
